Spanish grading policies Introduction: 10th grade Spanish continues in a logical sequence from work completed in the 9th grade course. Now that we have seen most of the basic structural patterns of Spanish, our goal in 10th grade is to enhance fluency, comprehension and an understanding of culture and literature. 10th grade Spanish is where things really start happening, because you finally have enough language to begin expressing original thoughts. The purpose of 10th grade Spanish is to prepare students for a successful A.P. Spanish experience. This is an awesome class... Assignments / Quizzes: There will be an assignment each night for students to complete. This assignment may be formal (reading selection, computer assignment, etc.) or informal (study/review new vocabulary words or patterns.) Assignments are due on a specific day. We will have quizzes almost daily. All quizzes count towards the term grade. However, students may choose to do bonus assignments to make up for low quiz scores or assignment points (including late assignments). To complete bonus assignments, choose and complete any number of assignments from the bonus menu provided in each unit. All regular and bonus assignments must be turned in by the day of the test. The maximum number of points awarded for bonus assignments may not exceed the number of points missing during the unit. For example, if a student has earned 187 / 200 on assignments and quizzes for a given unit, he or she may earn up to 13 bonus points for that unit, bringing his or her score up to 100% for the assignment/quiz category. Tests: Although much of our assessment will be done either informally or via quizzes, testing is a necessary part of school life. We will have written/oral/listening tests following each unit along with some shorter tests throughout the quarter. All tests are cumulative and will be announced in class and online. Tests may not be retaken, but students may prepare for tests by studying, completing bonus assignments and paying attention in class. Late work: Required assignments are due on assigned dates. Pre-approved bonus assignments may be completed to make up points due to late assignments within a unit (provided that the bonus points are completed before the test date). Participation: Students can earn up to 5 participation points per day. Most or all of these points are based on how much Spanish is spoken in class during the day (and how little English is spoken). Additional participation points are earned for excellent behavior or outstanding language performance in class. Points are taken away, if needed, by those students that distract from the learning of others. Unlike 9th grade, students must earn a "5" on the speaking declaration to receive full credit. Mastery Points: Students desiring an “A” or “B” grade will complete Mastery points and Enrichment activities. Mastery points may be completed by any student at any time throughout the term. Students may earn up to 200 mastery points for completing activities from the pre-approved list of authentic activities. You are welcome to turn Mastery points in at any time prior to the end of the term. They are worth 10% of the total course grade. Projects: We will generally do one project per term. Projects are culminative examples of students' ability to communicate in Spanish and understand Hispanic culture. These are longer than normal assignments and students will have ample time and instruction for proper completion. Clear guidelines will be provided and students that follow directions carefully should earn 100% on projects. Projects count as part of the assignment grade. Breakdown of grades:
The good new on grades (efforts count!):
Tutorials: I encourage you to each spend at least one tutorial / week in Spanish. It will give us the chance to work individually and improve your strengths. I am also available daily during lunch and advisory periods. Behavior expectations: All students are expected to treat themselves and others with respect, refrain from interfering with others' learning, be honest in the classroom and with course work and arrive on time and prepared. Those able and willing to comply with these requests will be allowed to participate with the class in all activities throughout the year. I adhere to all school-wide regulations including behavior, discipline and attendance policies. Specific expectations are posted in class and on the Internet (click here for classroom rules). |
