6th grade Spanish policies ¡Bienvenidos al español! Welcome to Spanish! Ours is the 4th most commonly spoken language in the world with over 400 million native speakers. When you consider that 10% of those reside in the United States, the importance for learning Spanish seems ever increasing. Although many of you have previously taken French and Spanish, we assume that we will begin from the beginning in this class. When language is first learned, either as a first or second language, it is generally oral. Therefore, the bulk of our classwork, homework, etc. will be oral. We will conduct class in Spanish every day, we will speak in Spanish every day and most of your homework will be designed to help you improve your basic speaking skills in order to develop a strong foundation for further study, should you so choose. I will not assign you a textbook in 6th grade Spanish, although I will provide ample practice material in class and via the Internet. Please check this site frequently for practice material, assignment help and quiz preparation. The following policies will be adhered to in Spanish class to ensure that all have a successful learning / teaching experience: Grading Grading will be broken down into the following categories:
There will be homework each night. However, many of the homework assignments will be to study, practice, memorize specific new material. There are many ways to do so and I will help students understand the pros and cons of different methods. Even though we don't have written homework every night, please remember to spend at least 20 minutes per day reviewing and practicing what we did in class. This will help you to progress much more quickly. Please turn homework in on time. Late, incomplete or sloppy homework will be penalized. We have quizzes 2-3 times per week. They are often announced, but not always. Quizzes are to help students see what they have mastered. Quizzes may be retaken by prepared students during tutorial. We will generally have 2 exams per term, midterm and final. Preparation guides and practice exams will be provided for each exam. Exam grades are final and may not be made up. There will be one project per term to help students understand more about the target people and cultures. Specific guidelines and grading rubrics will be available for each project to ensure that students earn a good score on projects. I am happy to review your project during tutorial prior to submission. Participation: The language of our instruction and classtime is Spanish. None of you learned English by speaking another language. However, please rest assured that you will not be left behind because we are speaking in Spanish. I am an expert in teaching Spanish to beginners and will make sure you understand. In addition, all material presented in class will be available on the Internet so you can refer here for your questions. Your participation grade will be determined by your willingness to speak Spanish in class (as self-reported in class) along with bonus points earned through pesos and class bonuses. Students cannot earn participation points if they are not in class. Points will only be docked for English use, completing other homework in class, violating school rules or policies or disrupting the learning of others. Mastery points: Students will be expected to complete 150 Mastery points per term. These are activities done independently outside of class in Spanish. Homework, studying for class, etc. does not count towards Mastery points. For more details, click on one of the links below: Mastery points ideas Mastery points reporting form Behavior expectations ll students are expected to treat themselves and others
with respect, refrain from interfering with others' learning, be honest in
the classroom and arrive on time and prepared.
Those able and willing to comply with these requests will be allowed
to participate with the class in all activities throughout the year. I adhere to all school-wide regulations
including behavior, discipline and attendance policies. Specific expectations are posted in class
and on the Internet (click here for classroom rules).
