Spanish grading policies The main purpose of Spanish class is to enable students to use the Spanish language in the contexts which they will need: work, travel and in the community. Proficiency in the topics studied will assist them in doing so personally, professionally and socially. We will study 8 thematic units in Spanish. For each unit, students will complete assignments that will lead them to be able to perform specific communication tasks in Spanish. Some assignments are required of all students, while others are available for those needing extra practice, reinforcement or additional points (due to low quiz scores, late assignments or incomplete mastery). At the end of each unit, students will take a written and/or oral test to determine if they have achieved mastery. Tests are designed to show students that they can succeed in specific communication areas in the Spanish language. Tests may not be retaken, but students may prepare for tests by studying, completing bonus assignments and paying attention in class. Assignments / Quizzes: There will be an assignment each night for students to complete. Often, this assignment will simply be to study/review new vocabulary words or patterns. Assignments are due on a specific day. We will have quizzes almost daily. All quizzes count towards the term grade. However, students may choose to do bonus assignments to make up for low quiz scores or assignment points (including late assignments). To complete bonus assignments, choose and complete any number of assignments from the bonus menu provided in each unit. All regular and bonus assignments must be turned in by the day of the test. The maximum number of points awarded for bonus assignments may not exceed the number of points missing during the unit. For example, if a student has earned 187 / 200 on assignments and quizzes for a given unit, he or she may earn up to 13 bonus points for that unit, bringing his or her score up to 100% for the assignment/quiz category. Late work: Required assignments are due on assigned dates. Late work will be accepted before the corresponding unit test with a penalty of up to 50%. Bonus assignments may be completed to make up points due to late assignments within a unit (provided that the bonus points are completed before the test date). Work turned in from previous units after that corresponding unit test will be docked up to 95%, with no possibility of bonus assignments for that unit. Participation: Students can earn up to 5 participation points per day. Most or all of these points are based on how much Spanish is spoken in class during the day (and how little English is spoken). Additional participation points are earned for excellent behavior or outstanding language performance in class. Points are taken away, if needed, from those students that distract from the learning of others. While participation points cannot be earned if a student is not in class, I drop a couple of days each quarter in order to not penalize students who have to miss occasionally. Mastery Points: Students desiring an “A” or “B” grade will complete Mastery points and Enrichment activities. Mastery points may be completed by any student at any time throughout the term. Students may earn up to 250 mastery points for completing activities in one of four categories: Speaking, Listening, Reading & Cultural experiences. There are hundreds of suggestions online (visit the link from my main page) if interested. Mastery points are worth up to 10% of the total grade and must be turned in by the specified date (usually 2 weeks before the end of the term). No credit will be awarded for mastery points that are turned in late. Projects are culminative examples of students' ability to communicate in Spanish and understand Hispanic culture. Often, these will completed on computer (digital movies, web pages, powerpoint presentations). Clear guidelines will be provided and students that follow directions carefully should earn 100% on projects. Projects are counted under Enrichment points (these are activities designed to enrich our regular curriculum). Breakdown of grades:
