Use of the big-9 in Spanish:


When describing things in the past-tense, the imperfect tense is usually used in description.  The following nine situations almost always use the imperfect tense:
  1. Actions that were in progress
  2. Physical appearance / characteristics  (era / eran)
  3. Time (era / eran)
  4. Date (era)
  5. Age (tenía / tenían)
  6. Location  (estaba / estaban)
  7. Physical condition (how you are feeling physically) (estaba / estaban / etc.)
  8. Emotional state (how you are feeling emotionally) (estaba / estaban / etc.)
  9. weather (hacía)
  10. attitudes / desires (quería / le gustaba / etc.)
An example is given below with describing a picture using the big-9.  Pay careful attention to which verbs are used for each situation:

Actions that were in progress (no definite beginning / ending): Los hombres jugaban con los toros en la plaza. Los toros corrían de los hombres.

Appearance:  Los toros eran grandes.  Los hombres eran guapos.

Time:  Eran las siete de la mañana.  Era temprano (early)

Date: Era el siete de julio.  Era lunes

Age:  Los hombres tenían 22 años.  Los toros tenían 3 años.

Location: Estaban en la plaza de toros.  Ellos estaban en España.

Physical condition: Los toros estaban cansados.  Los hombres estaban mojados (wet).

Emotional state: Los hombres estaban animados (enthused).  Los toros tenían miedo (The bulls were afraid).

Weather: Hacía mal tiempo.  Llovía.  (It was raining.)

Attitudes / desires:  Los toros querían dormir.  Los hombres querían jugar con los toros.
